Understanding your results
How to read each result an existence check can give you.
How to read the results
The progress bar at the top shows how many references passed, for example 8 of 10, an 80% pass rate. Under each reference, its card shows a verdict on the title, the authors, and the year. If the reference includes a DOI, the card also shows a verdict on the DOI.
Found
The reference matches a record from a database source. The bottom row of the card links to that record.
Needs checking
There is a lead, but not enough to confirm it is this reference. This happens in two cases: the match is a page that cites the reference, not the reference itself; or the match is a search results page or a similar record, so the fields can't be compared one by one. The card includes lead links you can open to check for yourself.
Common causes: the reference is recent, a preprint, or from a regional journal and is not yet in an authoritative database; or a book has a page only on a bookseller or aggregator site, with no catalog record.
Needs a deeper check.
After searching the academic databases, no matching reference was found. Usually the citation has a typing error, or it is made up or fabricated. Before you draw a conclusion, click Deep check for a more thorough check.
Not found
No database returned a match. When there may be related records, the card gives up to three links.
Common causes: a misspelled title or author name; public databases have limits on what they cover, so recent preprints, niche or regional journals, and monographs may be missing; or the reference does not exist.
Error
The check did not finish: the data source was unreachable or timed out. This reference is not charged any credits. Try again later with Retry to rerun just this reference.
Out of credits
Your credits ran out before this check started. Add credits to continue checking the remaining references.
Key points
- Every reference that passes has a source link, so you can verify it yourself.
- Rechecking a reference unchanged within 30 days costs no credits. A reference whose fields you edited counts as a new reference.
- Results only state what the records say. They never silently rewrite your original text.
