How to Cite an arXiv Preprint in APA 7: Format and Examples

# How to Cite an arXiv Preprint in APA 7

In APA 7, an arXiv preprint gets the authors, the year in parentheses, the title in italics and sentence case, the repository name "arXiv," and the DOI. The repository name takes the place where a journal would normally go, and APA's own preprint examples carry no "[Preprint]" label. Every arXiv paper has a DOI built from its arXiv ID, so you rarely need the plain URL. One rule comes before all of this: if the paper has since been published and you read that version, cite the published version instead (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020; arXiv, n.d.).

The examples below are real papers. Their details were checked against arXiv and Crossref records on November 4, 2026.

The format, with an example

The pattern is:

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of the preprint. arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.XXXX.XXXXX

Here it is filled in for a three-author paper posted to arXiv in April 2026:

Rao, D., Wong, E., & Callison-Burch, C. (2026). Detecting and correcting reference hallucinations in commercial LLMs and deep research agents. arXiv. https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2604.03173

Four details to get right:

  • Title in italics, in sentence case. arXiv lists this title in title case ("Detecting and Correcting Reference Hallucinations…"). In the reference, capitalize only the first word, the first word after a colon, and proper nouns. Acronyms such as LLMs keep their capitals.
  • "arXiv" where the journal would go. Plain text, followed by a period.
  • No "[Preprint]" label. APA's preprint examples go straight from the title to the repository name (APA, 2020).
  • Not "arXiv preprint arXiv:2604.03173." You will see that wording in many exported citations, but it is not APA's format. APA's examples name the repository once and end with a DOI or URL (APA, 2020).

In the text, a work with three or more authors gets the first author's surname and "et al." from the first citation on (more in our guide to APA 7 in-text citations). APA's preprint page cites its own examples in the same parenthetical form (APA, 2020). For the Rao paper:

  • Parenthetical citation: (Rao et al., 2026)
  • Narrative citation: Rao et al. (2026)

Use the DOI that arXiv assigns

arXiv automatically gives every submitted paper a DOI that matches its arXiv ID. To build it, put 10.48550/arXiv. in front of the arXiv number and add the usual doi.org address. For arXiv:2604.03173 the DOI link is https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2604.03173 and it opens the paper's abstract page, so it always leads to the latest version. Posting a new version does not create a new DOI (arXiv, n.d.).

APA's examples end with the DOI when the work has one and with the page URL when it doesn't: its PubMed Central example ends with the article's URL (APA, 2020). For an arXiv paper you will always have the DOI, so use it.

If the paper was published later

APA puts it plainly: "Ideally, use and cite the final, published version of a work." If you used the preprint, cite the preprint (APA, 2020). APA also notes that a preprint "may or may not be peer reviewed or may be the author's final, peer-reviewed manuscript as accepted for publication" (APA, 2020).

So before you finish your list, open each paper's arXiv abstract page. Authors can add a journal reference and a journal DOI to their arXiv record, and arXiv encourages them to (arXiv, n.d.). If one is there, the paper has a published version. An empty field proves nothing, because filling it in is up to the authors, so search the title in Google Scholar or Crossref as well.

For example, Alex Glynn posted a paper to arXiv in March 2025 (arXiv:2503.19848), and its arXiv record now carries a journal reference to European Science Editing. If you read the journal version, cite it as a journal article:

Glynn, A. (2025). Guarding against artificial intelligence – hallucinated citations: The case for full-text reference deposit. European Science Editing, 51, Article e153973. https://doi.org/10.3897/ese.2025.e153973

Compared with the preprint form, three things change:

  • The title is no longer in italics. The journal name and the volume number are.
  • The journal uses an article number instead of pages. APA writes the word "Article" followed by the number (APA, 2025).
  • The DOI is the journal's. It points to the published article, not to arXiv.

Other preprint servers: same format

APA names PsyArXiv and PubMed Central as two common repositories and says to "follow the same format for other preprint archives" (APA, 2020). The pattern above therefore works for bioRxiv, medRxiv, SSRN, and similar servers: put the server's name where "arXiv" goes and end with the DOI or URL it gives. APA's own PsyArXiv example:

Hampton, S., Rabagliati, H., Sorace, A., & Fletcher-Watson, S. (2017). Autism and bilingualism: A qualitative interview study of parents' perspectives and experiences. PsyArXiv. https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/76xfs

Check that each preprint reference is real

A preprint reference can look complete and still point nowhere: one digit off in the arXiv ID is enough. In PerfectRefs, you paste your reference list. The Existence check looks up each reference in Crossref, OpenAlex, arXiv, and other scholarly databases and flags any it can't find. It comes with a free daily allowance. The Style check compares authors, title, year, and DOI field by field with the database record. It shows the record's values with a link to the source, lets you accept a fix with one click, and outputs the list in APA 7. It uses premium credits (2 per reference), and new accounts get 10 premium credits.

FAQ

Do I add "[Preprint]" after the title?

No. APA's preprint examples go straight from the title to the repository name, with no label in brackets (APA, 2020).

Should I cite the arXiv version or the published version?

Cite the version you actually read. APA prefers the final published version, so when a journal or proceedings version exists, read and cite that one if you can (APA, 2020).

The paper has an arXiv DOI and a journal DOI. Which one goes in the reference?

The DOI of the version you cite. The arXiv DOI (10.48550/arXiv…) opens the arXiv abstract page (arXiv, n.d.); the journal DOI opens the published article.
